Poetry is a creative endeavor, one that is difficult for some students to embrace. A writing prompt can sometimes help.

This activity provides a unique spark of inspiration. Colorful paint palettes supply a framework as well as interesting words and phrases students must incorporate into their verse.

Here’s how it works:

  • Pick up free paint color palettes from your local paint store.
  • Explain to students that you will provide a skeleton of a poem by supplying words they must use. They will compose around existing words to create a poem.
  • I recommend modeling or doing one together as a group first.
  • Distribute one strip from the paint color palette to each student. Students use the words on the palette in their poems.
  • Encourage creativity by walking around, discussing word choice and giving feedback.

Your results will probably be as amazing as ours were. Consider displaying the poems for all to read during the month of April, which is National Poetry Month.
