If we consider the original intent of RTI, "Response to Intervention" (Richard Allington, 2011 IRA Conference) we look at the Daily 5 structure as a perfect marriage with it. Why? Those students who are Level 2 or Level 3 within the RTI model are in need of more intensive instruction. The big question that arises with administering intensive small-group (one–three students) or one-on-one instruction for our students always seems to be "What do I do with the rest of the class?" The Daily 5 is what we do with the rest of our class!
Daily 5 not only adds the structure to a reading block, but it also answers the question "How do I get my kids to read independently?'
Dick Allington has also done research that shows that if students are in a 90-minute reading block, they must spend at least 60 minutes of that time reading an independent book of choice. If the reading block is 60 minutes, they must spend at least 40 minutes of time engaged in the act of reading. A 30-minute block? At least 20 minutes of reading (Richard Allington, 2011 IRA Conference).
So RTI and Daily 5 are a perfect marriage.
