Joan starts this lesson by asking the group to read their books silently as she briefly listens to each of them. She notices strategies students are using independently and provides feedback. Then she introduces cause and effect, modeling how this strategy can help aid comprehension. After that, she asks them to write the strategy and its secret in their reader's notebooks, as well as how it will help deepen their comprehension.
