There are two phases to launching each Daily 5 component: phase one, foundation lessons, and phase two, the 10 Steps to Teaching and Learning Independence.

What are foundation lessons?

Foundation lessons are short bursts of instruction that teach desired behaviors for all Daily 5 choices and prepare students for the component of Daily 5 to come. We teach these lessons to prevent the undesired behaviors that keep children from practicing correctly and building stamina. By teaching these lessons before the launch of each Daily 5 choice, we avoid lengthy lessons during the launch, and set our students up for success.

There are foundation lessons for each of the five components of Daily 5. These foundation lessons are listed on the launching brief and were determined by asking, “What do the students need to know and be able to do to be successful with this task?”

Foundation lessons are not all taught in one day, nor are they always taught in the order presented in the Daily 5 book. Think about the students you have, their immediate needs, and the Daily 5 component you want to introduce next. These factors will dictate the order of the lessons you teach and review.

Once foundation lessons for a component of Daily 5 are taught, we move on to the second phase of the launch, the 10 Steps to Teaching and Learning Independence.
