It’s summer, and I’m hanging out in an airport while traveling for work. As I people-listen (kind of like people-watching, but with my ears), I hear many children’s voices. Often the adults who travel are quiet and busy with computer work or absorbed in their own worlds. My travel today is different, with families and children of all ages around me.
As I listen, there is much more noise than usual, with a common theme: they are learning! There’s an older child reading out loud to her younger sibling. There’s a young, beginning reader sounding out words to his mother. There are middle-school-aged kids practicing fractions with each other. There’s a dad standing at the window with his son and daughter, and they’re reading the numbers and letters on the airplanes. One young boy just jumped up out of his chair to celebrate finishing the third book in a series.
And as one mother gathers her children to begin boarding the plane, her little guy complains that he’s not finished with his chapter yet!
My time passes quickly during this airport wait, and I’m enthralled by these children of all ages who are engaged in airport learning. Thanks to the teachers who instill the love for reading and math in our children. What a wonderful experience to listen to these children as they continue that love of reading and learning even at the airport.
