Notes: We’ve all experienced the look, feel, noise, and glare of a classroom illuminated with fluorescent lights. The overhead cool-white fluorescent lighting can ricochet off the surface of tables, desks, or school assignments and into the eyes, causing a type of unintended glare called veiling reflection, which results in discomfort and lower productivity. We find ourselves searching for light sources that eliminate harsh overhead lighting. Janet takes us on a tour of her classroom and the lights she uses to take the place of the fluorescent lights in her room.
What to watch for:
- Notice the different types of lighting.
- Listen as Janet explains the lighting in her room.
Reflect:
- Do you have students who are sensitive to overhead fluorescent lights? How do you know? What might you do?
- Janet says that every lamp is a good lamp. Why do you think she says that? What do you believe?
- Why would you want or not want lamps in the classroom? Where might you find lamps for your classroom?
