For Teachers

Looking for a fun and engaging way to spark your students’ creativity in writing? The "Who, What, Where" storytelling activity is a simple yet effective strategy to inspire young writers. Students randomly choose one card from three categories: Who (a character), What (an event or action), and Where (a setting). The combination provides a framework for their story, giving them just enough guidance to get started while leaving plenty of room for imagination. This activity works well as a whole-class writing prompt, a center activity, or even a creative homework assignment. Plus, it’s adaptable for different grade levels and writing abilities.

For Students

Are you ready to write an amazing story? First, pick one card from each of these three piles: Who, What, and Where. These cards will give you a character, an event, and a setting to use in your story. For example, you might get a brave astronaut (Who) who discovers a hidden treasure (What) in a spooky cave (Where). Once you have your cards, use your imagination to create an exciting story. Think about what your character does, how they feel, and what happens next. Remember to include a beginning, middle, and end, and have fun bringing your story to life!
