Cross-checking is a strategy for ensuring the words sound right, make sense, and match the letters (and sometimes the pictures) on the page. Readers must be able to monitor for meaning, pausing as necessary to apply fix-up strategies instead of continuing to read when meaning breaks down. Constantly grounding reading in meaning is vital to the success of this strategy.
