The Daily 5 Finale: Sharing

If you’ve ever been to a concert, you may have noticed that the final number moves, inspires, or leaves a lasting impression on the audience. It’s often a final moment of beautiful work that brings a meaningful time together to a close. We want Daily 5 to result in the same kind of feeling, so we make time for sharing before we end Daily 5 for the day.

Sharing takes 10 minutes or less and consists of three to five students sharing how a strategy helped them as a reader or writer. This varies depending on their individual goals and strategies.

• One student may want to read a portion of text to demonstrate their progressing expression and fluency.
• Another may want to share how Flip the Sound enabled them to read a word accurately.
• It might be a wiggler, who proudly announces that they stayed in one place and read the whole time.
• Another may share that they played around with different leads to a story before settling on the one they liked best.
• Often, it’s a student we prompted to share when we informally conferred with them.
• We might take a moment or two to restate the focus lessons of the day, and have students share by raising hands or sharing with an elbow buddy how they tried them out with some success.

We monitor turns, making sure every child has an opportunity to share at least once a week. There are several ways to do this. Students might have an assigned sharing day or we might use a check-off sheet and prompt students when it’s their turn. However we choose to keep track, making time for sharing gives everyone a chance to review and celebrate the learning that occurred that day. Sharing helps end each Daily 5 session with a smile and a sigh . . . letting the last note of the morning resonate in beauty.
