My school is rich in beautiful diversity, as evidenced by the twenty-five different languages spoken by our children and their families.
One of the ways we get to know each other and build community is by having themed family nights, most recently Family Reading Night. It was well attended and enjoyed by all so I thought I would share it in case you'd like to do something similar in your own school.
Grade-level teams, instructional assistants, and special guests (local police officers, a public librarian, and high school students) plann readings or organized literacy activities that would appeal to toddlers through sixth graders.
Families attended three different sessions of their choosing from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. A program with a map on the back informs them about choices and locations. Snacks and door prizes (all literacy related) add to the excitement.
Take a peek at the program to see what was offered; perhaps you'll be inspired to begin your own family-night tradition. (I didn't include the map)
