Formula for Success

Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.
~Lou Holtz

I was at a sporting event recently and marveled at the players' athletic ability. These players were all capable of controlling their bodies and their movements with the skills necessary to succeed. But more than their innate ability, they were all motivated by something internal to sign up for this sport and to practice through bruises and injuries. It was obvious from the smiles and waves that those with positive attitudes were also having fun, and it showed in their performance.

I looked at these athletes and realized that they were just a subset of the audience that was watching and cheering them on. The difference seemed to be that not everyone in attendance was capable, with the ability to play the sport, and most of us were not motivated enough to put in the hours of dedicated time necessary.

It takes all three of these attributes to succeed in what we do, whether at sports, school, reading, or writing. Having a positive attitude is so important, but without motivation we just won't be as successful. Put the package together and you create a picture of success.

Ability, motivation, and attitude make a great formula for success. Work every day on combining these ingredients to be successful.
