Lori Sabo
Together Apart. That was our theme this year. And as I closed my laptop on our last day, the convergence of emotions took me by surprise. Goodbyes are always hard, but it was strange to say goodbye to students I have loved all year but never met in the flesh.
I sent them off with love, hopes that we will meet in person when school begins, and the request that they spend time each day this summer reading for fun. Just for fun. A chorus of “We know”s and eye rolls ensued, because that has been the request all year. Since day one, they have heard the mantra We only get good at things we practice, and we tend to practice things we enjoy, so read for fun. And then I equipped them to do just that. We practiced checking out e-books from our public library system and reading them on our browsers. We looked at the school website and all the resources there for reading. We talked about borrowing book bags from school and how and when to pick them up. They are ready for sunny days and summer reading.
“What are you going to read, Mrs. Sabo?” I didn’t miss a beat. I told them about the book I had just started that morning, and showed them the stack waiting to be opened.
How about you? What are you reading for fun this summer? Need recommendations?
Download this list for books I think you’ll love, many of which you’ll want to share with your own students when school begins again.
We too are Together Apart. But grab your favorite iced drink and a great book, and let’s pretend we are together, reading just for fun.
Friends,
We are working on a special project to make your experience with us even better. We are not quite ready to share everything, but we just can’t wait any longer to share this:
EEK!! We promise there will be more coming soon!
