As adults we read for pleasure and to gain knowledge. Since we are proficient readers, we focus our energy on understanding and enjoying what we read. This isn't always the case with children. Children who are heavily focusing on decoding or increasing fluency may not be as focused on comprehension, therefore missing much of the meaning in the text. Teaching children the skill of self monitoring is essential as they learn to read and comprehend text. This strategy forces a reader to stop and think about the text being read. Then, if meaning is lost, it provides a list of "fix up" strategies to assist in regaining comprehension.
