When choosing how to deliver instruction, we have many options. Think about what and whom you are teaching, and how to hand the work over to the student(s) in a scaffolded way. This will help you decide how to teach and reinforce the instructional point for this interaction. The table below highlights the most common instructional practices teachers use. Though these are familiar methods used in good teaching, it's important to identify them with a purposeful look at what they are, how they are used, and when they are needed.
We use various modes of delivery based on the strategy, setting, and audience. You may find that you need to use more than one of these strategies to teach and reinforce the learning. In fact, many of them work in connection with each other. For example, you may think aloud while you are modeling. As you are teaching, it is important to remember to watch for evidence that students understand the instruction.
