Have you ever noticed that when we read a fabulous book, eat something delicious at a restaurant, or experience an exceptional movie or event, we often want to share it?
This happened to me recently. I’m a fan of Garth Brooks, but my husband, Carl . . . not so much. However, I have seen Garth in concert and know what an amazing show he puts on. So, when it was announced he was coming to our area, I purchased two tickets and asked my husband to join me. He agreed, and on May 1 we attended the Garth concert in Des Moines, Iowa.
Garth did not disappoint. He sang all the fan favorites, engaging with and entertaining the audience for more than three hours. He introduced his backup singers and band members, showering them publicly with accolades for their dedication, talent, and hard work. He thanked his fans for making it possible for him to do this day in and day out. He stood in awe of the applause, genuinely humbled by the nonstop cheers and adulation. And when we left, my husband agreed the concert was great and said that, if given the opportunity, he would most definitely go again.
Somehow, in three short hours, Garth gained a fan in my husband and made me love his music even more than I did before. In fact, we continued to listen to his music the entire car ride home.
Imagine how great it would be if we had this same influence on our students. If we created a love of learning so deep they didn’t want to leave when time was up. If they rushed into our rooms each morning, ready to learn more. If they continued to talk about their learning with enthusiasm while on the car ride home or at the dinner table.
The reality is, we do have the ability to have this same effect. Teaching each concept with beginner's enthusiasm, even if we've taught the lesson numerous times before; engaging with students about their interests, families, and friends to build trust and deepen relationships; and recognizing the efforts of our students, whether big or small, are all ways we can infuse our students with a love of learning . . . an even greater love than they had before.
