Having a designated time to meet students and their families before school starts allows them to become familiar with their school home. This time is as much for the caregivers and you, as it is for the students. Those who attend become familiar with their school and classroom environment, and get to know you, their teacher. This especially helps with those who are new to the school or those who are nervous about the first day. You may also wish to invite students to bring their supplies and while they are there have them select books from the classroom library to fill their book box. There are many great ideas to make this time a success!

This checklist includes some helpful suggestions and there are two we highlight with importance:

  1. Take a photo of the child and those who attend with them. Post these photos around your room. Add names to help you learn and remember each family.
  2. Obtain a way to communicate with your students’ caregivers. A signup sheet for email and phone number is a great idea. You may also wish to ask if they are okay to receive text messages.
