Periodic Maintenance

At the beginning of the year we spend time building a community in which students support each other and feel supported. This involves demonstrating sensitivity, concern for others, and a high level of cooperation. We also strive to develop a culture of curiosity where learning from mistakes is the norm.

The community and culture we build benefits from constant maintenance and the shoring up of its mortar through reteaching.

It's good to take time to reflect, evaluating whether our community is supporting the culture. If not, what needs to be shored up so students can thrive? 

Here are a few aspects of the community to review:

• Choosing a successful seating spot—Are students respecting the personal space of others?
• Speaking with kindness—In both words and tone.
• Purpose for learning—When this is clearly articulated, motivation and engagement improve. 
• Fine-tuning routines and transition—For example, how we should enter the classroom for success.
• Our own tone of voice and language—Are we modeling respect and kindness in every interaction?

We believe students achieve at a higher level and rate when our community supports them and is the underpinning of their learning. Reflect on and refine how it is working with the group you have. It will be worth it.
