Pessimist, Optimist, Realist

The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails. —William Arthur Ward

Which one are you today?

Are you optimistic about life and the future? Are you being brought down by the pessimist's view of things? Or are you a realist who has realigned your vision and sails so you can adjust to the changes in the world around you?

Here are three tips to help you adjust your sails:

  • Look objectively at the issue to gain understanding, and then step back. Don't get caught up in an ongoing negative/pessimistic spin.
  • Refuse to get sucked into a pessimistic circle of friends or colleagues.
  • Choose friends that keep you positive.

It can be easy to dwell on the negative and think that everything is bad. The challenge is to see the negative but not get personally sucked into the downward spiral.

Accept the fact that we are the ones who determine how we react to situations and change. We can complain about every little thing, or we can expect that change is inevitable and prepare ourselves to roll with the changes.

Life is a windy ride. Let's adjust our sails and ride it with an optimistic, realistic attitude.
