Years ago, the term fluency was used in conjunction with reading aloud. Anyone who has been transported during a great read-aloud can attest to the power of expressive, fluent reading. A gifted reader has the ability to capture our rapt attention and launch us on an adventure when their words are combined with our own imaginations.

Fluency also plays a critical role in comprehension. With focused strategy instruction, fluency is something all our students can achieve.

Perhaps the most critical requirement for gaining excellent fluency is to read appropriate-level text. Nothing destroys fluency faster than a text that isn't easily accessible. This Ready Reference Guide outlines the strategy for teaching students to choose good-fit books.
