The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.
~Socrates
Change is always upon or around us. Sometimes we make personal decisions to make changes in our lives. These are often well thought out with a plan and a process for dealing with them. We feel much more in control when we have decided for ourselves to make changes. It's much easier to look with positive energy on the new changes and deal with them with excitement and enthusiasm.
But what about changes that are made for us or to us? How do those changes make us feel? Sometimes we feel resentment or loss, and we put up a strong fight to prevent them from happening. We spend our energy battling the thoughts of change and figuring out how we can stop the process or gain control.
Fighting change is exhausting, both mentally and physically. We put up every roadblock we can imagine to maintain our status quo. When we finally realize that the change is happening no matter how much we fight it, we settle into a defeated spirit, exhausted and depressed as we begin to move forward.
Why do we fight change so dramatically? It's only human nature for most of us to fight change. We fight it with emotion and energy and drama, and are tired when we finally accept it.
I see people who are flexible and adapt easily to changes in their world, and I have asked myself, "What is their secret?" What I have found is that those who adjust to change more easily have figured out that they can use their energy to focus on the new rather than fighting the old. Just as this Socrates quote says, "The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new."
Save your energy for building new adventures.
