When the first days of school jitters are behind us and the honeymoon starts to wane, sometimes behaviors begin to percolate. Your first thoughts might be those of wondering if Daily 5 is really working for your group.

If student behaviors during Daily 5 are slipping a bit, here are a few tips to get things back on track.

1. Pull out the original I-chart with independent behavior expectations. Look through the behaviors and decide if there are some that need to be added?

2. Take the original I-chart and publish it in front of the students. This means taking the old chart and re-writing it on a lovely piece of paper so that it can be posted for the duration of the year in the classroom. It is important to do this while the class is watching or they will never anchor their learning to the new chart.

3. When behaviors during Read to Self begin going downhill, the first question we always ask ourselves is the following, "Do the students need new books in their book boxes?"

4. Have students model least desirable and correct behaviors again.

These strategies are effective for getting back on track anytime student behavior declines.
