When reading non-fiction books, many students flip through them quickly and feel they have a good understanding of the text. However, a reader must use text features if they are to gain information and deeper comprehension of non-fiction material. Teaching students how to utilize text features when reading is best done through think alouds and modeling. The more our students see this strategy modeled and explained, the more comfortable and proficient they will become at it themselves.
