When You Find Yourself Stressed

When you find yourself stressed, ask yourself one question: Will this matter five years from now? If yes, then do something about the situation. If no, then let it go.
—Catherine Pulsifer

What great words of wisdom! Too often we stress over details that in the big scheme of things will not matter.

So how do you recognize the stresses that you should focus on? How do you decide in the moment if something is a major stressor?

Stress is a personal reaction to a situation. That is why given the same situation, some people will react with stress, and others will have no concerns or worries.

Every issue, action, or event has the potential to be stressful if you let it. Yes, I said, "You let it become stressful." You choose to give an event or situation your full negative attention, and that causes a stressful reaction. If you instead decide to be calm about the situation, to take a deep breath and then forget it, you are acknowledging the situation and choosing not to give it your energy or emotions. You have now deflated the situation and are choosing not to let it become a stress for you.

How many times during the week do you find yourself stressed? Start keeping track of the times and events that cause you stress. Once you recognize the events that trigger your stress, you can now purposefully choose to react to those situations differently.
