A word collector is glued to the front cover of a writing journal.

A Word Collector is a sheet of paper separated into boxes with a different letter of the alphabet in each box. This simple form transforms individual vocabulary work into an achievable goal.

We keep a large Word Collector in our classes to record the words we discover during read alouds and content work. The personal word collector sheets are glued into the front or back of our students writing journals to collect their personal vocabulary words. We have also put them on file folders, which hold up well in book boxes and stand in front of the student for easy visibility during writing time. Older students may prefer to keep them in a binder.  Word collectors are a great way to help students increase vocabulary. We find students enjoy using their personal words in their everyday conversations as well as their writing.
