Have you ever been in a tunnel or canyon, spoken or yelled, and heard your words echoed back to you? It’s wonderful to witness a child doing this for the first time. The expression on their face reflects their amazement and fascination with the phenomenon.
Those new to hearing themselves on a microphone or having their voice recorded and replayed often feel the same amazement and fascination.
A fun exercise is to turn your phone recorder on and tape a conversation with your family or friends. What do you hear when you replay that recording? What words do you regularly use in communicating with others? Are your words somewhat negative, or are they positive and upbeat? Were you smiling or frowning through your words?
Your words affect you as well as others. Just as when you speak in a tunnel, your words bounce back for others to hear and feel. We have many ways in which we share our words. Words matter when we write them, speak them, and sing them. Words matter when we listen to them, hear them, and repeat them. Regardless of how you share your words, choose them with kindness, because they will bounce back to you many times.
Always remember, your words matter.
