Please help! Our district is looking to adopt a new reading program and they are leaning towards Wonders by McGraw Hill or Engage NY (aka Amplify). I cannot imagine giving up my reading workshop model and the Daily 5 structure. Any feedback on which of these programs is more conducive to continuing with a workshop model? Thanks for your feedback! Kerry

I’m not familiar with either of these programs, but have had to deal with reading adoptions before. Maybe these thoughts will help.
–How “intense” does your district expect you to use the adopted series? Do you have to follow lesson by lesson with the teachers’ guides provided?
–How does the series differentiate for learners?
–Are “little readers” provided at various levels within each grade level?
If you have the flexibility to add to the series, you can look through the guides to determine which strategies are introduced through them, and tie in your workshop lessons through them. It may not exactly follow how you might have introduced them, but it’s good compromise. If you’re allowed to “pick and choose” from the teacher’s manual for the activities that work for your students, you can decide which parts will support your workshop.
Again, just some ideas to ask about and get everyone thinking about the best ideas for your kids.
Here’s a link to an article on the website from the Sisters talking about this topic. It has links to a couple of other article you may want to peruse.
