Sue Landreth is working with a small group of second-grade boys on their sight words. They are working to master a few words with the long-i vowel sound.
After they practice, Sue asks them to look closely and see what they notice about their words. Then she introduces a book that will give them practice reading the words in context. We like that all the boys read simultaneously. This means that everyone is working while Sue focuses her attention on one student at a time.
She also works to expand their vocabulary by taking a few moments to discuss what the words mean. In case you are wondering why she cuts corners off the cards, it's so the boys can easily sort the cards later if they combine them to play a matching game. Sue has cut the top right corner off one set, top left off another, bottom right off the third, and bottom left off the last set.
