Celebrate Learning to Jump

Oh, the joy of watching an 18-month-old learn to jump. She has the stance and the posture, and has learned to crouch down a bit to get spring in her legs. Then she takes off, straightens up, and gets one foot about a half inch off the floor. The other foot remains soundly planted but the feeling of accomplishment is not diminished. We all celebrate, and she claps and then tries again.

Learning takes lots of practice.

How many times do we practice before we get it right? We seem to allow this practice for children but become less tolerant of adults who need to practice learning something new.

Just like an 18-month-old, adults need to learn to celebrate the practice sessions and feel a sense of accomplishment with the small gains when learning something new. Whether in the classroom or at home, as lifelong learners, we also need to celebrate each small attempt at mastering something new.

Remember the child learning to jump as you jump into new activities and learning in your life.

Celebrate learning to jump!
