Beneficial Breaks

Carol Moehrle

When was the last time you took a break? It used to be that a break meant stopping one activity or work project, and physically and emotionally removing ourselves from that activity and relaxing for a few moments.

Nowadays, taking a break is often just doing something other than what we were originally doing. Now we answer e-mails, or start another project, or send a text, or make a phone call while taking that break. We don't actually relax and stop moving; we just do something else.

We need to analyze our daily patterns to see if we are really breaking the work/stress cycles in our lives. We need to build in breaks that allow a separation from work and give us time to breathe, relax, and refocus on something calm.

Taking a break is a deliberate and purposeful act that helps us reset our thoughts and create a healthy mindset. If you are not accustomed to taking breaks, it may be time to schedule those breaks into your busy life.

Don't forget to take a break. It will be the most healthful activity you do for yourself.
