Our district uses Rigby Literacy By Design, Daily 5, and Cafe. Most teachers use the Literacy By Design for whole group lesson focus, Cafe for small group or individual lesson focus, and Daily 5 for management. What is the most effective way of combining all three?
I would think that coordinating which strategies the teachers are introducing through their mini-lessons (emphasis on “mini”), in conjunction with each other would keep the teachers from introducing too many different strategies at once. For example, if your students need “Back up and Reread”, look for Literacy by Design lessons that foster that strategy, as well. Now, I’m not sure about Literacy by Design, but if it has to be done in a specific order, do the reverse–introduce CAFE strategies for small group/individual lessons that go along with the LIt by Design introduction as much as you can.
However, we all know that not everyone needs the same strategies at the same time, so teachers would have to be mindful of those specific needs.
