I am trying to determine whether it is appropriate to have a student working on more than one strategy at any given time. So, if a particular student is in a strategy group, should I focus on the same strategy during 1-1 conferring?
from S Rea
The Sisters recommend that we always work on a Comprehension Strategy in addition to another strategy that the student needs.
I would say to check on the strategy presented in the group during your 1-1 conference, but perhaps pull in another strategy specific to that student’s needs.
When I am making the decide on what to teach next I ask myself, “What is the child’s or groups current greatest need?” Secondly, what would an appropriate nudge be verse a push? What is in the ZPD? Sometimes I address these needs in whole group if more than 50% need the skill or strategy if less need it I may teach it in small group or to an individual during a conference. This way I likely can avoid reteaching to those that already know the skill or strategy.
