I am a Reading Specialist at a small charter school. I work closely with the classroom teachers to help our students work on the right reading strategies. One of the teachers and I are working with a student now and teaching them Check for Understanding. They understand the idea, but we want to them to truly understand the WHY behind the strategy. Any suggestions on how to help with this part of teaching the strategy?

This spells out what we want kiddos to be able to do as they read–to always be aware of the ‘who’ and ‘what’
