Until kindergarten students are more independent in reading, do you spend more time in groups with students rather than independent conferring?

I personally think you should do both but my teachers always start with individual conferring first. Once they have the individual conferring down, then we add in the strategy groups. Make sure that your rounds are not too long and your kids have built enough stamina for you to actually start working with kids.

If you are comfortable meeting the needs of your students through individual conferring, that’s great. Strategy groups are helpful when you notice a small number (suggest no more than 4) who have similar needs to have a discussion. Keep in mind, though, that within that small group, even the three or four will show differences in the kind of support they need.
