A: Daily 5 and CAFE work together to provide students of all ages and abilities with the instruction and time they need and deserve to meet the rigorous standards expected of them.
During literacy time, teachers teach a brief focus lesson (CAFE), followed by students choosing one of five authentic tasks—Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, or Work on Writing (Daily 5).
While students work independently, teachers meet with small groups and one-on-one to assess, set goals, provide instruction, and monitor progress. This enables them to provide just-in-time instruction for the child in front of them based on their individual needs (CAFE).
When student stamina breaks, teachers gather them for another brief focus lesson, and the cycle continues throughout the literacy block.
