Looking for an engaging way to reinforce vocabulary, math facts, or key concepts? Try the Fist Bump activity to help students build fluency and deepen their understanding across subjects.
For vocabulary practice: Post a vocabulary word on your door from recent read-alouds, content areas, or units. As students enter or exit the classroom, they can give a fist bump while defining the word, using it in a sentence, or providing synonyms. For example, if the word on the fist is “great,” students could bump it with words like “fantastic” or “exceptional.” If the word on the fist is accommodate, they might give the definition "to change something to fit someone's needs."
For math practice: This activity is a perfect fit for math concepts, too! Post a number or math fact, and as students give it a fist bump, they can say a way to reach that number, recite a math fact, or share an equation that results in the number posted. For example, if the number is 10, they might bump the fist while saying “5 + 5” or “20 - 10.”
From vocabulary words in science and social studies to math facts and creative ways to practice word knowledge, the Fist Bump activity adds a fun twist to concept reinforcement and student engagement!
