Hello all,

My district has recently purchased the Fountas & Pinnell classroom (interactive reading; shared reading; Phonics, Spelling, & Word Study, Minilessons). I have a 2 pronged question.

Has anyone used any of these compoonents using the Daily 5 structure? How did they fit together?

How do merge the CAFE strategies with the lessons?

My response doesn't address Fountas and Pinnell classroom as such, but rather using components of the programs in the Daily 5 structure.  Since Daily 5 does not contain any content, but provides for the classroom structure, any program can be used within the structure. If you look at the goals for each of the Daily 5 areas, you'll be able to see the connections to the goals of F & P. The strategy lessons taught in F & P are most likely built on the same or very similar research based reading strategies as CAFE, so it's a matter of matching them up and using the CAFE menu--and you can add to the menu any strategies you don't feel are covered with CAFE.  The importance of keeping your lessons to the length appropriate for the age students you teach will probably take some work on your part, but if you have others in your building who use Daily 5/CAFE, this would be a great PD or team building opportunity.
