At the school I teach there are often long absences. Students can be absent an entire week, and even two or three. How can I prepare homework for them using Daily 5/CAFE? I feel like if I just tell them to "read," they most likely won't since they are on vacations.

We're really not in the business of homework :), but perhaps having them keep a journal about what they are doing on their vacation could be an interesting way for them to work on writing.  Of course, suggesting books about the places they are going to visit may also spark their desire to read.
