Using an engagement chart as a visual representation of growth helps motivate students and provides a way for them to see their progress. Minneapolis teacher Hannah Carmon takes the practice of graphing engagement a a step further by celebrating success with a motivational song. When her fifth-grade class grows in an increment of two minutes or more, she plays a song to celebrate!

This original idea is a motivator for her students and can be adapted to meet the needs of your students as well. Use the songs she suggests on her chart, or ask your class what songs they would like to add. Determine the goal to be celebrated. Will it be any time progress happens or at specific intervals of growth? Then, be sure to communicate your expectations for this celebration so students can remain safe and have fun.

When reading and writing engagement grows, students become better readers and writers and have fun, and we can’t think of a better reason to celebrate!
