From the Field are candid, captured-in-the-moment snapshots.

Because of this, the pictures, video, and text will be raw and unedited.

You will see real life, real teachers, and real classrooms . . . We hope you find these helpful and inspirational.

Using I PICK, children learn how to select books that will meet their needs and enable them to achieve their goals. Last week in Denver we reviewed the I PICK method for choosing books and shared this idea for a whole class lesson.

Create a table with the letters I PICK going down the left side and four or five book titles across the top. Then, select one of the books and think aloud as you go through each of the criteria for choosing a good-fit book. Place a check in the box if your book choice meets the criteria. This provides an autitory and visual model for students to reinforce the process of choosing good-fit books.

After introducing and modeling I PICK, we find a book mark can help to remind them what criteria to look for. This book mark is included below.
