It’s time to start journaling. For those that have not taken the time to document your thoughts, COVID is the perfect time to start this new habit. Journaling, or daily documenting your thoughts can be very healing during times of trauma and change. We have definitely been through trauma and change since March of 2020. Our lives have changed in so many ways, from school closures, to home schooling to remote on-line teaching and so much more. Our schools and students and families have been through five months of ongoing change. How are you dealing with the changes? What are you doing to help yourself heal during these times of trauma? If you are having trouble finding a quick and easy way to help, try journaling.
It’s so simple to get started. I used to do all my journaling with paper and pencil. I needed a pencil in case I made a mistake. And then I found out that there are no mistakes in journaling. Just write down what comes to mind at the time.
Remember, there are no right or wrong things to write about. Just let it flow, and do it in a few quick minutes. Journaling doesn’t need to be in a paragraph, or even complete sentences (I know this would drive some of you crazy)! Start by writing 3 things: what you are grateful for, what you did for yourself today, or what made you smile today? Three thoughts or ideas.
For those that need a little prompt, let me give you a nudge. I start each day with this reminder:
“Today I am thankful for the beauty of a new day.” And after that I write
- 3 words: sunshine, tears, brownies.
- or 3 statements: another COVID day, love staying home, kids are driving me crazy.
- or 3 wishes: I wish I could see my sisters. I wish COVID would go away. I wish i was at the beach.
- or 3 activities for the day: cleaned the closet, weeded the garden, made myself put on makeup!
Now more than ever, give yourself a few minutes each day to journal your thoughts. It will help you deal with the stress and trauma of COVID-19 and other stressors in your life.
