The fourth and final component of the PATH Menu is How? Justify Your Work.

As students work through various math problems, it is important that they be able to explain how they arrived at a solution. They can ask themselves these two guiding questions:

  • How did I arrive at my solution?
  • How do I know that my solution is correct?

As students build their mathematical proficiency, it is important that they

  • listen to the explanations of others and ask questions to help others’ further clarify or explain their thinking.
  • analyze and use that information to help explain their thinking.
  • reason about how they arrive at a solution and communicate this thinking to others.
  • recognize an error in their thinking or another’s thinking and be able to explain what the error is and how to rectify it.

Using the Standards for Mathematical Practice, we identified three strategies in the third component of the PATH Math Menu. These strategies can be taught at any grade level and can be used across a broad range of mathematical concepts.

As we roll out this menu, we will release accompanying videos as well as the Ready Reference Guides that will guide you in how to teach these strategies to your students.

It is our hope that this PATH Menu will be a tool that supports you as you work to help all students become better at math.
