Measure It to Manage It

Share

I have used the Conferring Notebook for many years. When it was first created, I carried my binder with me all over my classroom. Years later when the digital notebook was created, I upgraded to a laptop and delighted in the fact that it took even less time to effectively confer with students and have everything linked and documented for each child. It is also a valuable tool for parent conferences or emails.

One of the best things about the Conferring Notebook is the ability to track student progress. Every small-group session or conferring session includes an opportunity for the teacher to document a number from 1 to 4. This is the teacher’s tool to measure how well the student grasped the concept taught, which then helps the teacher determine whether to move on to a new skill or stick with the current one. It takes less than a second, but it provides valuable guidance and direction.

If we can measure student progress, we can manage student progress. A student’s day-to-day performance is a powerful opportunity to shift, guide, and grow their ability to master a concept or skill so that they are ready for the independent task of quizzes and tests.

I use the digital Conferring Notebook for all subjects in an effort to effectively measure and manage student progress. How has the Conferring Notebook improved your work with students?
