Skills or Strategies?
Is it a skill or is it a strategy? In this blog post written by Dr. Timothy Shanahan, he shares how it could be both–depending on how we try to apply it.
A skill is something we know and does not require conscious attention. A strategy, on the other hand, requires conscious attention and a set of steps or a procedure to follow. When teaching a strategy, you, "teach them what it is, why it has value, when to use it, and you give them guided practice in applying it in various situations" (Shanahan, 2023).
And what he points out, that we couldn't agree with more, is that we should, "worry less about classifying them and more about how you think students need to apply them."
