In this video Gail meets with a small group of third grade girls. She knows these students from her coaching work in this class. This is the first day she is pulling this group together and sets the protocol, starting with everyone reading their own book out loud. This was not usual for these students so she took a few moments to explain why they would read out loud and what she would be doing while they were reading.

The teaching point of this lesson was Monitor Meaning and Back Up and Reread. Through the discussion that followed, the group shared what they do when they come to a section that they don't understand in the story. We found it interesting that the girls thought the best strategy for Monitoring their Meaning was to ask the Teacher for help. So the second teaching point became, "You can't take your teacher with you, so what can you do to fix up your meaning."
