I am having trouble combining our district curriculum, Reading Street, with daily 5. I can’t find time for the mini lessons, centers and Reading Street lessons. How do others combine it all?
Think about your centers . . . are they related to your curriculum? Are you required to do them. If you initiate the Daily 5 as the Sisters recommend, you really don’t need centers. Developing the independence to do read to self, work on writing and word work, along with read to someone and listen to reading, take the place of centers that you have to create.
Couldn’t your curriculum’s lessons be worked into your mini-lessons? Do you do CAFE–it really is easy to fit most good lessons into the strategies.
I do Reading Street in my 2nd grade ELL class with the Daily 5 structure. I don’t do the centers - I don’t find them worthwhile usually. My CAFE lessons are taken from the Reading Street lessons. So they are usually the vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency lessons built into Reading Street (although it all depends on the lessons, the needs of my students, etc.) Sometimes, I will just teach the skill that is highlighted during the week in Reading Street, but do my own lessons to cover it. I do phonics/spelling in small groups during Daily 5 time.
