I am about to Launch Read to Someone and I am having a bit of trouble understanding how can be effective; if a student chooses a partner and they are in the middle of the book and start reading a page to someone, how can the other student really check for understanding when they have missed the beginning? Is it better when choosing a partner, to stay with the same partner and read the same book each time, starting from the beginning so that there is continuity and better discussion. Or maybe they have a different book that they use for Read with someone, that when they are Reading to Self? My students are in grade 3. Would love some thoughts or ideas on how you run this part of Daily 5.
Thanks
There is no hard/fast rule about book selection, but if it works better for your students to “save” a book for Read to Someone, that’s fine.
I am thinking that if your students are in the middle of a book when they begin Read to Someone, that would be a perfect opportunity to give a short summary of what has happened so far in the text. If they concentrated on the main ideas (characters, problem, etc.) that might be enough for the other child to feel caught up.
