I am working with a teacher who is having students "pulled" during breakouts. She struggles with helping them identify with whom to partner during Read with Someone when they are back from being pulled out, getting right to task on Word Work, etc. I've suggested leaving some type of "marker" indicating to where students should go after returning to the classroom...think laminated bright colored paper with the student's name on it placed next to the student with whom they should read, etc. (could be storied in student book boxes). Does anyone have other ideas that have been successful? Thank you!
You have a good idea! Another might be to perhaps have them make their choice before leaving, so that they would know exactly what to do when they come back. It could be written on the boards, or a marker placed, as you suggest. It might be easier to have them choose something other than Read to Someone, as the partner wouldn't have to be waiting on the return.
