Does anyone have any information or experience on how Daily five fits with science of reading?

I have the same question. As I continually read more about the science of reading, I wonder how the "Accuracy" part of the CAFE menu can be changed to fit more of this thinking--there are questions about the teaching of sight words as well.

I've been curious about that as well.  Any information would be very helpful!

I am also looking for information about this.  I have been studying SOR for a few years, and have abandoned the strategy of looking at the pictures for help with decoding.  I noticed that the strategy is on the CAFE menu to help with determining the meaning of the unknown word, but the ready reference guide discusses using pictures to help decode unknown words.  From my reading, I have learned that this strategy is harmful to beginner readers.  I noticed that there isn't a parent pipeline for the accuracy strategy of looking at pictures, so I wonder if it just needs to be updated.

The emergent cafe menu has great examples of phonemic awareness and phonics skills needing to be mastered.  I taught reading intervention for my first years of teaching.  I was trained to have students look at the pictures for clues, BUT if it was a horse and students said pony, I'd still direct them to the letters to make sense of the word based on the letters in the word, NOT just the picture.  I wonder... Is there value to that?  I understand kids should decode words with SOR but if we connect pictures to the text and work them together is that still a valuable tool?

Hi. I am just finishing my masters in a program that is basically built on the science of reading. Accuracy could include practicing their letter sounds, decoding, high-frequency words and any other activities that lead to orthographic mapping.  Think of it as how will I get my students to read words accurately. What skills do they need to do so? Blending, segmenting, phoneme manipulation all lead to accurate word identification.  Fluency can be nearly the same.  The goal is to reach automaticity in all phonological skills. Students can recognize letter sounds, blend, segment, manipulate sounds in words in under two seconds. Once the accuracy and fluency are in place, students are able to focus their energy on comprehension. Hope this helps.  Fantastic resource for teaching automaticity and accuracy is David Kilpatricks' Equipped for Reading Success.

You will have to create a Structured Literacy block of 90 mins that incorporates Daily 5 tasks. The structured literacy will be the direct instruction you teach during your Focus Lessons and during your CAFE groups.
